Diet and Exercise (or Hello Muscles, I Forgot I Had You)

June 25, 2008

So. It’s June. Almost July. It’s getting to be swimsuit season (even though I still refuse to wear one, and you can’t make me! *stomp*). It’s time to get down to business. The business of being in shape, that is.

I tend to hover right around one average weight. I’m not overweight…I’m certainly not underweight…I’m just “weight”. My weight is fine. It’s my lack of muscle tone that starts to grate on me. My once-shapely biceps, formed from years of carrying trays overhead while waitressing, have all but sunk flat. My once-flat stomach, formed by who knows what, is still relatively flat…but contains considerably more “squish”. My once-toned legs, formed by miles and miles of restaurant-walking, are just “there”.

This is not acceptable. Not at all. I am 25. I should be in the best shape of my life, not just “there”.

So, what do we do, kids, when something in our lives is unacceptable? That’s right, WE CHANGE IT! One of my favorite quotes goes something like this:

There are two ways to be happy. Either change your reality, or lower your expectations.

Well. I’ve never been much for lowering expectations, so that means the only option remaining is to change. Change my eating habits (or, in my case, eat something period) and actually maintain a routine of physical exercise (because I’ve been told typing is not exercise, nor is scooping my cats’ litter box).

In speaking with one of my best friends about our particular (and similar) goals in the physical fitness department, she presented me with a brilliant idea. Why not use each other for motivation, and come up with a way to stay accountable and on-track?

Thus, the following plan was born. We have entitled it, “Operation Be Fine by ‘09″ (or Operation BF09). Only, you have to say it, “Operation Be Fiiiiine by Oh-Niiiine”. It sounds better.

The plan is as follows. Each of us is required to eat a very healthy dinner every single night, and do some form of physical exercise, even if it’s as little as going for a 10 minute jog or doing some sit ups. If we fail - we will put $1.00 in a jar. If we do one but not the other, you guessed it - 50 cents. At the end of each month, we basically “owe” the other person that money, whether it be buying them a present, or spending that money on gas to go visit each other (she lives in Portland, I live in Seattle…about 3 hours apart).

The hardest part for me is going to be the healthy dinner. My tendency is to just not eat if I don’t feel like it. Forcing myself to eat - and eat a nutritious, balanced protein-filled dinner - is going to be a chore. I hate buying food for myself, and I hate eating it. I am the girl that buys fresh fruit and veggies, bread and milk and eggs, and then they spoil because she never touches them before they go bad.

So. There you have it. Operation BF09 will commence as of midnight on Sunday, June 29th.

Wish me/us (and my/our muscles…or lack thereof) luck!

  1. I think I speak for all your readers when I say we expect you to post lots and lots of photos of yourself. We need visual documentation of this “be fine by 2009″ phenomenon!

  2. Kev :: Hmmmm. I’ll think about it ;-)

  3. Ooh, good for you! You can do it. I’ve heard it takes 21 days to make that kind of lifestyle a habit. I recently started working out regularly as well but I fell off the wagon this week. No more! I’m going to pick up again. You have re-inspired me.

  4. Erin :: 21 days eh?? I think I could handle that! Sweet…glad I could assist in your re-inspiration! Keep me posted how it’s going for you, we will “not fall off the wagon” together! :)

  5. Good for you and your best friend! I have no doubts, at all, that you can do it. After all, just ten minutes of exercise is pretty easy. I dread what I’ll look like when I’m done with restaurants. My metabolism is NOT what it once was. lol You have that on your side still young one. :-)

  6. Corrina :: Thanks! I used to be in so much better shape when I worked in a restaurant…once I learned to quit eating the same food I was serving!!!

  7. Corrina’s right — ones metabolism goes to crap when one gets older, so you really have that on your side. You lucky duck. LOL I’ve been walking a lot and doing things that have made me acutely aware of my muscles. I totally got a kick out of the your title — it’s so my life. LOL

  8. Leigh :: That’s what I figured, I better start eating right and exercising now before it gets harder and harder later! Isn’t it kind of a wake up call when you go for a long brisk walk and get back and realize THAT made you sore!? I’ve been having those kinds of realizations lately…going…I USED to be able to do 500 crunches no problem. Now…50? Maybe? Haha..
